April 22nd, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

The following video shows a couple of nice improvements coming out in WordPress 2.8. I think the new theme uploader is going to please a lot of WordPress users.

Disclaimer: This is not any type of official release or feature notice…I am not affiliated with WordPress…I’m just a WordPress user who has installed 2.8 and am showing you a couple of features I consider to be cool improvements.

    It’s nice to see the creators of WordPress are really trying to make WP easy to use for non-tech savvy bloggers. Now, if I could just get WordPress to start my coffee in the morning I’d be all good! ;)

    I agree John…let me know if you find that coffee plugin ;-)

    Thank you so much for taking the time to create this video! Very informative… and now it makes me want to upgrade to the bleeding edge release even more. ;-) According to the WordPress Trac, 2.8 is supposed to be released in April, but seeing how there are three days left in April and there’s a 2.7.2 release mentioned in the roadmap, I wonder when 2.8 will be made public. *Sighs.* The pain of waiting. :-D

    This is great news (while I still have hair) — and a great tutorial. Question is, have you heard when they’ll finally release?

    @Hillary: Don’t know, but my “Guess” is it will be sometime this month…but that’s purely a guess.

    You don’t need to delete the old theme to upgrade it.

    Just rename it using the theme editor, e.g. theme.bak and then install the new version.

    @Annys: LOL…I guess that means my translator is working as it should :-)

    @figaro
    Yes and no. It does work but in a bit crappy way (sorry) and because I just wanted to watch the video I didn’t notice it. If you translate it back it sais: I’m just a wordpress user who is installed 2.8… :D

    I have a question about the translator. You have this installed so I guess everyone could just respond in their own language? And when you read it, my reaction will be shown in English? And someone in China wil see chinees. Is that true?

    @Annys: It the global translator plugin http://www.nothing2hide.net/wp-plugins/wordpress-global-translator-plugin/
    It when content is added the plugin submits it to google translator and then stores the translated pages. My site is in English, so it translates everything to the other languages I’ve selected (flags displayed) on the front. When others comment in their own language, I usually just copy/paste into google translator and respond back in English…I haven’t tested it to see if it’s “smart enough” to detect the commentors language and translate that into the other languages as well or if it just assumes all original content is English. The main reason I use it is that it seems to help bring people to my site who are searching in other languages.
