Video Request

November 17th, 2009

If you would like to request a video on some WordPress topic, you can do so by leaving a comment on this page. No guarantees that I can do it, but if it’s within my abilities and available time, I’ll put it on my list of new videos to make.

  1. January 6th, 2009 at 19:30 | #1

Can you put a video on how you put youtubes in the wordpress please. l tried to submit a comment in my blog but nothing that allows to embed a youtube clip. Why is this not in wordpress.

  2. January 6th, 2009 at 19:57 | #2

Sure, I’ll put that on my list. There are several ways to do it, but one of the easiest ways is to just copy the Youtube embed code and then in your post, switch to the html mode, past in the code and publish. See this thread on wordpress.org for more info:

    Here is the result:

I would love to have a tutorial on how to get the social bookmarks icons like you have on this site.

  4. January 12th, 2009 at 12:01 | #4

Easy. Just go to your admin and click on Plugins, then Add New. At the top, click on Popular and then look for the Sociable plugin. Install it…with 2.7 you should be able to do it from right there. Activate it. Then go to Settings and you should see a link for sociable where you can configure it.

  5. January 12th, 2009 at 19:17 | #5

Thanks so much Figaro. I had tried other plugins for social bookmarks but none worked. This one that you recommended was a dream to install and so versatile – I love it! I’m really glad I found your site, it’s helping me tremendously with my new blog.

You’re welcome Terri…glad you find the site helpful.

  7. January 12th, 2009 at 21:27 | #7

Do you have video’s for any of these questions? I hope so.

    1) How to do is create a new page that has a tab at the top of the page. There is the ‘Home’ tab, ‘About’ tab, ‘Privacy Policy’ ect., how do I get a new tab?

2)How do I get a post to be listed under the parent page that I select. I have it listed under the parent page that I want, but it does not show up on that page, the new post is listed on the bottom of the site under recent post.

I asked this question in wp forum but the information I received back is confusing.
. Most times navigation bars on themes are presented via the template tag, wp_list_pages(). Just create a new Page and it gets included in the list of pages.

    2. Posts are NOT children of Pages. If you want posts included in Pages the you will need to create a Page that uses a Page Templates|Page Template and that template will need to include the template tag, query_posts() in a loop to display those posts.

    3. The template tag, wp_list_pages(), can be configured to use sort_column=menu_order parameter.

    Resources:
    Stepping Into Template Tags
    Stepping Into Templates
    Template Hierarchy

    3) How do I change the order of the tabs at the top of the page? I’ve gone in and done a page order in the manage page section. But the changes I’ve made do not show up on the website. I see the changes when I’m in the dashboard in the manage page section.

    The site is http://www.puppydogsplus.com

Thank you for your help in this.

Try the “My Page Order” plugin to order your pages…I use it and it works well. The comment about posts not being children of pages is correct…posts and pages are different things. I will make a video in the next few days showing how to add pages and other links to the horizontal nav bar.

Can you post a video about page templates? I’m finding them very confusing, even with the resources listed at wordpress.org about them. I’m trying to make some changes, such as a different header and different colors on the pages (depending on the page).

Thank you for your time trying to help educate us on the ins and outs of WP :) . I love the site…it’s a great help.

    @Michelle

I’ll put that on my list. Thanks.

Hello figaro. Thank you for your help in the WordPress forums. I asked a question about your services there but you wanted me to contact you for that sort of thing through your website, however, I cannot find anywhere to email you.

I’d like to ask you a question through email about creating videos for me if that’s ok.

    Thank you,
    John

Hey, great site… My 2 video requests are as follows. First a video showing how to import SQL from a backup with the file size exceeds the file size that phpmyadmin can handle. Second video, would show us how to make the autoupgrade for the plugins work when you click on autoupgrade next to a plugin that is out of date.

    Thanks much!
    Clint

  18. January 23rd, 2009 at 01:31 | #18

Yep, that seems to be a popular request. I’m out of town this weekend, but when I get back I’ll make the video about uploading large sql files and post it.

Hi Figaro, found your site and watched the header/photoshop tutorial – good value! I’m a newbie to WordPress and still unfamiliar with some of the terminology and getting my head around plugins, widgets and elements. I setup the iNove theme because it boasted a “forms element”. Can you, in broad terms, tell me how I go about creating and displaying a form in my sidebar? Thanks

  20. January 27th, 2009 at 06:38 | #20

I don’t know about a form, but you can add html to the sidebar by going to the theme options page. A good form to add is the contact 7 plugin.

  21. January 27th, 2009 at 16:49 | #21

    @figaro
Hi thanks for that. Now using Contact 7 plugin which is very good. Won’t “Send” under IE6 tho – works fine in Firefox. Looking into it.

  22. January 27th, 2009 at 23:32 | #22

Hi Figaro, I’m using the iNove Theme which i find is great because i need somewhere to embed all my adobe.swf files as a hybrid with html and custom YouTube players etc. You can see here that the ‘Best YouTubes’ menu drops down under any embedded *.swf file. Is there any way to change the focus of the menu so as to be always on top and is it a hard thing to do? http://www.forpropertyinvestors.com

Thanks for the tut videos and the site i’m finding it very helpful and learning lots.

  23. January 28th, 2009 at 08:39 | #23

    @Daniel
If you click on Best YouTubes and select one of the pages you will see the menu actually drops down in-front of those videos. Maybe it has to do with the video on your frontpage being in a quote field??

Is there a way to have dropdowns coming off of the home directory? I’d like to have my ‘about’ and some other stuff coming off of ‘home’ but it’s handled differently than other pages.. thx

  25. January 28th, 2009 at 19:18 | #25

Use this theme, iNove, and it does that automatically when you add pages to a parent page.

  26. January 28th, 2009 at 23:55 | #26

    figaro :
    @Daniel
I’m not exactly sure why I’m getting mixed results? Some without the quotes goes under some don’t. Only logical fix is to put a few paragraphs of text up top but that’s the long way…

  27. February 5th, 2009 at 22:11 | #27

    Hi Figaro,
Not sure how else to contact you as I’ve misplaced your email, but you helped me fix my login hack a month or two ago. Here is a thread on it: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/227867 Well, it’s happened again!

Are you available to help again?

    Joe :)

If you ever feel like making a video on how to create a static post, I know a lot of people would appreciate it. That, in fact is what brought me here…I was trying to follow someone’s directions and changed the url in my settings and lost access to my site – your video saved me, but I still don’t know how to do that static post :-)

Canah…I’m not that good with rss issues. I can get basic feeds to work, but that’s about it. You may want to post to the WP.org forums and see if someone can help there.

  34. February 24th, 2009 at 15:42 | #34

    @dyctador
Yes, you can have different headers on different pages. You would just need to create page templates and use the template for the pages that you want the different headers on. See Stepping into templates on the wp.org site here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Stepping_Into_Templates

I’ll add this to my list of videos to create in the future.

Great videos, wish I had seen them before I did my WordPress installations:). They will also give me confidence when maintaining my WordPress databases. I would be interested in a video showing how to integrate bbpress and WordPress if it is within the scope of this blog.

Good afternoon sir. I’m currently in the process of changing the domain name for my WP blog, however I find the instructions given by WP complicated and I’ve tried other ways but still cannot change the domain name. I have grabbed myself a domain name (from co.cc) but the only thing that it seems to do is to hide (or redirect) the original blog name. I would appreciate it very much if you can help me with this.

    Thank you~

  37. March 9th, 2009 at 18:15 | #37

@marie: You will need to let your host know what domain name you plan to use. Then if you have your domain name with another provider (not your host) you will need to set it to resolve to your hosts name servers. This isn’t really a WP issue, but something you will need to work with your host to get solved.

    Hi there

I have modified the inove header by adding my logo and url however, I cant seem to get rid of the pre existing link with writing on it.
I want people to be able to click on my logo in the header which will direct them back to the index page.
I tried going to ‘header.php’ like in the Kubrick however, the link is not in there.
Any assistance would be much appreciated!
    Thanks
    Darron

    March 23rd, 2009 at 07:42 | #39

Oh, and now it seems I have done something wrong. I have modified inove as mentioned above but when I log out, a page appears with several lines on it saying something like:

Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /home/mysite/public_html/blog/wp-content/themes/inove2/functions.php:903) in /home/mysite/public_html/blog/wp-login.php on line 255

it repeats this changing the very last line with various numbers on it. I changed the original text to ‘mysite’ for security purposes (just in case).
I just wanted to take the original text out of the header and add my logo as rebuilding my website.
    Any assistance is much appreciated.

PS – thanks for the awesome, ease of use tutorials Figaro!

  40. March 23rd, 2009 at 09:31 | #40

@Darron: The header.php file in iNove is in a directory called “Templates”.

  41. March 23rd, 2009 at 09:33 | #41

@Darron: Change themes and see if this clears the problem…if not, then the problem isn’t in the theme.

THanks for your response Figaro. I will check the templates, however, I changed the theme back to a kubrick I previously worked with, and that one seems to be working.
Shall I try again from scratch with inove again, and work with a copy?

    Thanks

OK, now my website isn’t even loading up. I cannot access my site, cpanel or blog. Any ideas of what has happened here?

  45. March 26th, 2009 at 06:18 | #45

Accessing Cpanel doesn’t have anything to do with WordPress…you will need to contact your host about that.

I need to know how to transfer all my old posts (wordpress 2.5 I BELIEVE) to my new wordpress 2.7 web server. Since so much stuff changed with 2.7, I was not able to upload the old 2.5 database and then upgrade…

    what I have:
my old 2.5 database uploaded to phpmyadmin..
    my new 2.7 database uploaded..

    what I need:
transfer ONLY the old posts… to the new 2.7 database..

  50. March 31st, 2009 at 12:42 | #50

@andrew: That is very difficult to do directly in the db since you not only have “the posts” table to transfer, but posts are tied to other things, like categories, tags, etc., that are in other tables. Also, you will likely have duplicate post id’s when you try to combine two db’s. One way to accomplish this would be to set up a separate blog with your old db, upgrade it, then export the posts using the export feature in WP. Then import those posts into your new WP site using the Import feature.
