Video Request

November 17th, 2009

If you would like to request a video on some WordPress topic, you can do so by leaving a comment on this page. No guarantees that I can do it, but if it’s within my abilities and available time, I’ll put it on my list of new videos to make.

    Hello Figaro,

My question is how do I insert a google ad banner in the header of my website. I’ve tried inserting the code in header.php and that worked great except for one thing. Under IE the body of the site becomes align to the left :( . Any clue what I have to do to solve this problem.

    My code in header.php was:

    …google adsense script here….

    Thanks
    Frank

    Dear Figaro,

Thank you for your helpful WordPress “howto” blog. It has been very handy and informative.

Can you please tell me what software you used to generate the screen-capture videos?

    Many Thanks,
    John

Looking into changing the all the colours on the iNove theme I already done a custom header using your video thanks a lot.

If you could do a video showing me where to edit the code to get different colours on the background and the dirty grey side bits I would be thankful

    Thanks again

I am trying to create a drop down menu on the wordpress theme itself. I created a “parent” for the “products” link. When you hover your mouse over the product link only one drop down link shoes. I have a total of two but the second doesn’t show on the home page. If you explore the website than all two drown links show. The question I have, if this makes any scene, is how do I get the drop downs to work on the home page like it does when you navigate throughout the site?

    Thanks,

  6. April 26th, 2009 at 14:31 | #6

@Mike…I’m not sure, but I would compare what you have in the theme index.php file with what’s in the page.php file and see if there is something different about the way the code is entered for the hav bar.

  7. April 26th, 2009 at 14:37 | #7

@Jay: In the theme image directory there is a bg.jpg file and a light.gif file. Those two control the background color. You will also need to adjust the background color on line 20 of style css…it’s the color just before the bg.jpg is called.

Hi Figaro – Probably a stupid question but how do you change the home page using WP? I am using inove (can show you my site if you like) and have added a few pages however, theres no option to add to the the home page.
    Thanks

    Hi Figaro,
ignore my last comment, i found the template on your website, cheers. i was wondering if there was a way of changing the width of the header, so that it stretches across the webpage? I was wondering if i fiddled with the dimensions that it may not be compatible with the css… maybe not.
    thanks

  11. April 28th, 2009 at 07:45 | #11

@Matt: You would have to adjust the css to accommodate the wider header…I haven’t looked at that, but it shouldn’t be too difficult.

  12. April 28th, 2009 at 07:46 | #12

@Darron: I’m not sure what you mean by “add to the homepage”. Unless you have set a static homepage, your homepage is your blog index…the page that shows your latest posts.

    Hey.
Can you please tell me how to upgrade the iNove theme to a new version. The Automatic Upgrade Theme Option (via FTP) is not working. It’s hell of a job to edit all the files again in the upgraded version.

    Hum !
How about a video describing some major differences between major CMSs !
You could for instance show the benefits of WordPress as opposed to Drupal or Joomla!.
Thanks and keep up the good work !

    Hi Figaro,

There used to be a video on your site on “The Difference Between “Fixing” and “Patching””. It’s not there anymore. Please upload it.

    Thanks.

Can you make a tutorial on how to make WordPress act more like a CMS? There are a few tutorials out there, but they are difficult. Anything that keeps me away from Joomla or Drupal is a good thing!

More and more WordPress can be used as a CMS, not just a blogging platform, however, I need help. Your video tutorials are great! Thanks.

Love the site and saw this section so I thought I would ask for a video if you have the time. I am wondering how to cut down my WordPress Blog import file, which is 14MB while my max is 8MB. Thank you!

I am trying to set up my blog. I cannot find the admin page, dashboard, etc. to make a change in the wp-config file. Evidently I changed it and now the only thing I can find is my front page, where do I go to find my dashboard and change the wp-config (blog.totalrecognitiongroup.com

  24. July 12th, 2009 at 17:49 | #24

    @Julie Phineas
Julie, I don’t use the built-in WP import/export much, but I’ll take a look at it and see if it can be easily split up. It’s pretty easy to import large db dumps using bigdump…see the video here under the bigdump tag for that process.

  25. July 12th, 2009 at 17:52 | #25

    @Matthew
You can find the admin login to your blog by simply adding /wp-admin to the end of your blog url and press enter. You probably don’t need to get to your wp-config file, but if you wanted to do that you would need to ftp to your file system on the server…you can’t access that through WP.

    Hello Figaro:
I’m wondering if you have a video tutorial in how to set a website translator identical as the one you’re using in your educhalk.org blog, because that’s the type of translator that i need..
Let me know and by the way all the content that you have posted is the real deal…
Have a good day and best regards…..

  27. July 17th, 2009 at 17:06 | #27

@Ervin: The flags in the sidebar are from the Global Translator plugin and the translate link under each post is from the google translator plugin. You can install each of them from within WP if you are running 2.7 or later. When you install and configure the global translator, just add the widget to your sidebar. The google translator will add the link under your post automatically, although it doesn’t work with all themes, so you’ll just need to test it.

Hello Figaro, thanks for all the great tutorials! I would like to upload an image to span the entire background of my blog. I do not want to use the tile effect. Is there anyway I can upload one image to be the background?

    Hi there Mr. Steve:
I’m Just wondering if you have the video tutorial in how to get rid of the small image back ground when you change the image background on kubrick. If you go to my blog http://www.xplicitreviews.com you’ll see what I’m talking about.
By the way all of your video tutorials rocks,,,, that’s why I don’t hesitate in donate in any of your stuff.
By the way I saw the videos that you posted on youtube a while back where you’re arm wrestling whith a little girl which I’d assumed that it’s your daughter…
Thanks for your time and my best regards to you and your family…. Good Day..

  32. August 18th, 2009 at 06:46 | #32

@Ervin: Thanks. The black background around the header is in your header…you will need to remove it with an image editor like Photoshop.

  33. August 27th, 2009 at 17:36 | #33

I am in need of two things
    1. I would like to post a video in my sidebar and when clicked have it open in a seperate window at a size that is viewable
    2. I would like to pt a video “featured video” on my homepage that is not overly huge, but when some clicks something other than the video (such as a blog post)the “featured video” then moves over to the sidebar..I have seen it done on http://www.katiefreiling.com

    Any suggestions?

  34. August 27th, 2009 at 21:08 | #34

@jay jacobs: The first would be pretty easy…just make an image of the video screen and put that in the sidebar linking it to the video that opens in a new window…similar to what I have here: http://educhalk.org/blog/?p=170

The second may be a little more difficult…I can’t see the example you linked to…all I see at that link is a list of unformatted posts.

    I have two requests.

    1. How to add a second sidebar to iNove for certain pages
example this page have 2 sidebars at the right.

    2. How to feature a different banner for some pages. Now it`s just one image in the header, but still tricky?

  36. September 2nd, 2009 at 07:21 | #36

@Kjagen: iNove already has 4 sidebars builtin…North, South, East, and West. If you are wanting a sidebar on the right and left of the main content, then that would take some significant hacking of the code. To get different banners on different pages, you just need to create custom page templates that call custom header.php files that call your different images…I’ll add this one to my video list since a lot of people ask about it.

    @figaro

How about having 2 css? One with less page width and wider sidebar width.
And then use west and north. Then it would be something like this
    https://www.uka.no/
That page have two sidebars for just the “home” page.

But how to get two css and assign that for one page.

  38. September 2nd, 2009 at 17:28 | #38

    hey figaro,

your wordpress/xampp videos were very educational and useful. however, i am still lost as to how i can incorporate my own template into wordpress and test it through the xampp server. i am familiar with xhtml/css but i am still relatively new with understanding how php works.

would be possible to post a simple video clip?

    thanks in advance

  42. September 27th, 2009 at 07:44 | #42

@jason: I have some basic theme editing videos here, but php as a subject is a bit to big to cover how it works in a video. I would recommend recommend getting a good beginners book on php & mysql to get started…you don’t need one of the 1,000 page manuals…just a couple hundred page beginners book should get you started.
