@David V: Login to your WordPress admin and click on “links/edit”. That should get you to the place where you can delete the default links and add your own.

I am receiving this error: “The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, cpanel@hosting24.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

@noddy: If you can’t login to your server with filezilla, then you need to contact your host.

Hello Figaro, Your tutorial on how to change passwords in phpMyAdmin was my first real help and success in working with WordPress. I just started using WordPress on 3/28/09. Thank you so much, it gave me hope that I can do this.

So far I’m doing ok on researching Codex and WordPress resource material to figure out how to edit the site and learn terminology, but I still have the biggest problem. The site used to be able to upload images, change categories and manage posts from wp-admin but it quit working earlier this year, it’s version 2.0.2. I was told that no changes had been made to the site.

Since managing posts from wp-admin doesn’t work anymore I’ve figured out how to manage via phpMyAdmin, but solving the problem on how to make the image upload work eludes me. I’ve had some wonderful epiphanies since 3/28 but I’m feeling lost at the moment.

Your advice on this problem is greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Ursa

Used the kubrick videos to update my blog for our new daughter. Thanks. Without your videos I wouldn’t have been able get it done.

I’m moving on to trying to customize inove to match my current blog. inove seems to be more flexible from what I can tell.

Thanks and keep it up. Bob

  14. April 28th, 2009 at 07:50 | #14

@Hari: There are a few ways to do this…just search Google for things like “connect xampp to internet” or “connect localhost to internet” to find some tutorials.

  15. April 28th, 2009 at 07:53 | #15

@Ursa: Your WP version is very old and insecure. Instead of trying to fix that, I would upgrade first…that may fix all the problems. Since your version is so old, I would recommend upgrading incrementally by first going to 2.3.3, then 2.6.5 and then to 2.7.1 (or whatever the latest version happens to be when you do the upgrade). You can find all the older codebases here:

I used the side bar as a navigation bar with a few text widgets. It all has dissapeared and I don’t even know how to log into the WP blog panel!

the text that apperead in substitute to all in the sidebar Is:
Fatal error: Cannot use string offset as an array in …nomadpodcast.com/public_html/la_alfombra_magica/wp-includes/widgets.php on line 531

    any suggestions?
Thanks a lot for the videos. they are great!

@fernando: Add /wp.admin t the end of your web address to get to the login screen. Then disable that widget to see what happens.

Thank you Figaro for being so responsive to so many people! Perhaps you have a moment to help me too? I have uploaded a purchased theme (Thesis 1.5) to GLOBAT (my URL host)/blog/wp-content/themes/thesis (wherein are all the files), but when I sign-in to the admin function and use the dashboard to look at Appearance/Themes, my theme (Thesis) is not there. I’ like to wait for 2.8 (smile) but my needs a bit more urgent. Thanks!

  22. May 6th, 2009 at 15:38 | #22

@Hillary: Just make sure you have uploaded it properly…see the following video.

I would appreciate any suggestions. I used the Kaltura interactive video plugin. Entered the short code in the post as instructed. The code is showing up on my blogs home page, the link brings it to the post page and the video plays fine. I can’t figure out how to show the video on the home page instead of the code. I am totally unfamiliar with php and css. Thank you in advance. Diane

@captain_jack: Did you do a search and replace of your url in the database? See the following tutorial for how to do that.

yes i did in dzsoft php editor replaced all url to local host info is that the only thing that could be doing this?/
Thanx for such a prompt reply figaro!

  33. May 30th, 2009 at 13:45 | #33

Unless it’s hardcoded in one of your source files, then that’s all I can think of.

  34. May 31st, 2009 at 12:16 | #34

A quick question before i pull out my last lil tuff of hair hehe
If the wp-content is the only thing i incororate from the online blog ,is it fair to say the hardcoded source code would be in there someplace??

  35. May 31st, 2009 at 13:31 | #35

It could be in the theme, but most likely it’s still in the database…if I were a betting man, I would bet that you have missed a url with your search and replace. If, for example, you did a search and replace on http://www.sitename.com, then you wouldn’t get anything that is just http://sitename.com. Search your db for just your site name…if you didn’t hardcode it into your source code, then it’s there in the db somewhere.

wow when i say you know your stuff i mean YOU KNOW YOUR STUFF

I;ve just secured a copy of WP Remix 2.0
Is there a tutorial to load it into xampp since it dosent come with a wp-content folder?

  39. June 5th, 2009 at 13:37 | #39

@captain_jack: I haven’t purchased it to figure out what it is or how it works, but of it’s a theme, just load it in the themes directory and activate it.

    Hey there Figaro…
You videos are very informative and help. Thank you very much! However, I have a problem that I hope you can help me with for the local installation of wordpress with xampp. I’m running Windows XP home ed.

Before I come upon educhalk.org, I downloaded xampp according instructions I found in a little tech book. Instead of downloading xampplite, they suggested the xammp file.

I downloaded it to C:\, i.e., C:\/xampp. Next, I disabled the firewall, check the ports, Apache and Mysql were running fine. Changed the parameters to “wordpress” and did all else according your videos.

The problem occurs when I point the browser to http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php. I get this 404 error –

    localhost
    06/16/09 20:08:15
    Apache/2.2.11 (Win32) DAV/2 mod_ssl/2.2.11 OpenSSL/0.9.8i PHP/5.2.9

I tried to uninstall xampp and start all over, But there is NO uninstall feature for this program in the xampp folder, at least none that is readily visible. When I tried to delete the folder manually, it says it can’t be deleted.

What do I do to get to to the WordPress admins pages? Also, side bar, how would I uninstall xampp if I wanted to given that there is no uninstall feature available?

I’d greatly appreciate it, if you can help me out. Thank you. Perhaps I can return the favor one day. Don’t know how, but just know that I’m grateful for any help you can offer me! Thanks again.

I forgot to mention that I downloaded xampp.exe.

  46. June 17th, 2009 at 07:23 | #46

@Chinyere: Make sure it’s not running in your taskbar. Look at the lower-right of you screen and if you see the XAMPP icon in the taskbar, right click on it and exit. Then you should be able to delete it and give the XAMPP Lite a try.

  47. June 20th, 2009 at 06:54 | #47

    Hello

I like your site and although I mostly changed already the stuff I wanted to, I wonder how you can add a drop down menu, a picture with a link etc. in the header. I though of making a few pictures bottom right of the banner and link them.
I’d really appreciate if you could get back to me and help.

    Keep up the good work.

    Hello,
As a newbie, I really appreciate your site and your honest for coming up with this kind of info just to be used FREELY by others. What a kind-hearted of you.

This question may sounds stupid to you, but I appreciate if you can help me with my site. In my blog, http://www.inspiredmum.com, I couldn’t set my ABOUT page. It goes blank whenever I click from the site itself. But that page is available in the system (whenever I sign in as administrator). Hope you can help me to overcome this setback. TQ

Your site doesn’t load for me, but go to Settings/Permalinks and set them to default and click the Update or Save button.
