How to Run WordPress on Your Windows Computer Using XAMPP

Note: The following tutorial is intended to demonstrate how to install XAMPP and WordPress on your local Windows computer. It is not recommended that you connect this to the web…this is a very insecure set-up intended for local (off-line) purposes such as local testing, development, etc.

    First I want to thank you for this video series. I had tried Xampp and Wamp before with no success.
    I followed the sets in the video and get this error:

    If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.

    I am running Windows XP Professional, Mozilla 3.0.8, IE 7.0.5XX
    Wordpress 2.7.1 and XAMPP Lite [PHP: 5.2.8]

    @Bruce:

    1. Make sure your anti-virus software, or firewall, is not blocking access. You may need to disable them temporatly to test this.
    2. Make sure the ports are open…I show this in the video.
    3. Make sure XAMPP is at the upper-most level of your drive…it should be your drive and then the xampp directory.

    Thank you, I got it working on my thumbdrive now. I have another question. I am trying to develop 2 different blogs. I copied 2 wordpress folders and named them differently. When I open the second, I get a WordPress already installed and when I log in it goes to the first one. How do I set up 2 different blogs.

    I thank you for all your advice. As a novice it is wonderful having someone with your expertise and knowledge.
    I have a new question, once I develop my blog on my local machine and then want to upload it to my server service, how many areas do I need to change to have the URLs look there and not on my H drive?

    @Figaro
    I’ve developed a local WordPress site using XAMPP with WordPress 2.8.

    I notice that WordPress 2.8 has an automatic upgrade facility, but can’t get it to work on my local site.

    Do I nreed to alter some setting? Or is it simply not possible to use the auto upgrade facility on a local setup?

  15. September 6th, 2009 at 11:44 | #15

    @Keith: Sometimes you can, other times you can’t. I can upgrade my XAMPP install on my home computer, but can’t at work…probably has to do with firewall settings.

    Thank you very much for this. My first installation failed … I watched the videos and followed along, and now everything is working fine from my USB. Thanks again for creating this tutorial.

    I followed the tutorial put XAMPP directory in route of USB stick and also tried in route of C:. I also checked ports. Shut down virus checker. Tried this on two Vista machines.

    In the dialogue box it shows both Apache and MySql services started but ‘running’ is not displayed alongside.

  19. September 20th, 2009 at 14:00 | #19

    @Stefan: That’s a problem…something on your computers are preventing them from running.

    @figaro
    So what do I need to do to trouble shoot this? Or is there something I need to install before I install XAMPP
