What I am finding through my readers is they not only do not understand how to upload a theme… they don’t know what an FTP client is, never heard of nesting, extraction, zip, unzip… nothin’.

If we took the time to detail every step, you could make a complete 4 hour movie. :)

Great job my friend. Very informative.

hey – a link to a site map would be awesome

  6. January 21st, 2009 at 21:35 | #6

    @samboll
Welcome Samboll. I’ve never actually used a sitemap, so don’t know much about them. I just installed the Google XML Sitemap plugins, configured it and ran it. Should I actually post the link to the xml file somewhere on the site?

    Hi Figaro,
I’m one of those people who doesn’t know how to find the http://FTP…I understand what it means in terms of people able to build your own website etc but I don’t know how to use it. I know how to extract the theme folders and I have the ones I’d like to use in my wp content folder with the classic and default but I don’t know how to get it from that folder to where it will show up as a theme for me to choose…and am stuck at the point in your video where you FTP it to the site (the video is too quick for me to see where you were pointing the mouse to click on TP etc. please help.

  8. February 3rd, 2009 at 19:58 | #8

Just pause the video if it’s too quick. The themes go in your wp-content/themes directory on your webserver. You will need to contact your host about how to FTP files to your server.

Nice simple tutorial and very good. My question is how do you delete a theme in cpanel? I have 3 so I could learn from, now I don’t know how to delete them.

Thanks again for the great tutorials

  10. February 8th, 2009 at 18:49 | #10

Just use file manager and go to wp-content/themes and select them and delete them.

Figaro, I have come to know your advice and services feel comfortable to offer you some money for your services. I would like some help to install and sort out an existing pluggin problem for user registration and login system for my new site.

I’m reasonably new to wordpress but finding my way. I am getting stuck on a few things! And would appreciate tuning into my sites and concept and a little help

As per this advertising page http://educhalk.org/blog/?page_id=11 could we start off a possible future alliance with my site with this user/reg/login plugin with the 10$US(i assume) I’m happy to pay it up front.

The problem is users/can register but not login to use the forum etc. I would like that each user sees a little image of themselves if they are logged in and perhaps links to user profile. There is no rush on doing these things it’s a site getting built as we go in space time!
    -Daniel

  12. February 19th, 2009 at 19:14 | #12

Perhaps a good start would be you registering for the forum or site side bar and experiencing the problem to login that my users are having.

And could you please inform me of a way to transfer you the required payment up front. I rarely use a Paypal account as I’m in Australia. I do have an account but i don’t have any money in the account. Though possibly i could get some transferred in their? Unless you know a simpler and easier way?

  13. February 20th, 2009 at 12:19 | #13

@Daniel: I have been out of town for the past week and am just getting caught up. I don’t do a lot of custom plugin stuff, but I’ll create an account on your site in the next day or so and see if I can be of help.

  14. February 21st, 2009 at 05:54 | #14

That’s OK you will see what you can and can’t do. We’ll work it out as we go! Take your time! l’l set as administrator when i see! Even a standard plugin long as it works.

Figaro, I’m totally new to web publishing/design, so, even though I followed your implicit directions on how to upload a theme using cPanel, I’m still having problems. It seems that the file never unzips in cPanel and in WP the message “Broken Themes, Stylesheet is missing” message shows up. I tried it with several themes with the same outcome, hence, I’m guessing that I’m doing something wrong. Any suggestions?

  16. February 27th, 2009 at 08:06 | #16

@Elena: If you are following the directions in the video, then that should work unless there is something wrong with the unzip feature in your Cpanel. Have you tried to FTP the theme using the FTP procedures in the video?

  17. March 17th, 2009 at 08:59 | #17

HELP! I can’t get your video to download and I really need it…I uploaded Sociable onto my Cpanel and I can not get the icons to display- Can you help?

@Meghan: The video is playing fine here…maybe just a temporary glitch with YouTube…seems to happen every now and then.

  19. March 19th, 2009 at 13:24 | #19

Thank you for posting on the forum and directing me here. You are a great teacher! Very easy, straightforward directions. Thanks again. :)

Any image editing software should work.

  24. March 19th, 2009 at 21:18 | #24

When I go to transfer my file (in filezilla) over to the right hand column (to my go to my site) there are no folders that say wp-theme like yours do? So nothing is being transfered to my site even though filezilla is saying its been sucessful. Do I not have my filezilla set up correctly?

  25. March 20th, 2009 at 06:50 | #25

@jenna: You should see the themes directory in the wp-content directory…just double click on the wp-content directory in the list on your server.

  26. March 20th, 2009 at 13:06 | #26

    Hi!

I am trying to upload a new theme. I have a couple downloaded from my FTP site, and they appear on my WP themes page, but when I click on it, the photos do not show up. I’ve watched your tutorial and done everything right (but I have a mac) and it still doesn’t come up with any pictures. HELP!

Also, it seems like WP only let’s me have 4 downloaded themes at a time, but I cannot seem to delete them from my FTP site, do you have any idea why they won’t delete?

    THANK YOU!

  27. March 20th, 2009 at 16:09 | #27

@Jessi: Sounds strange…really can’t say without access to your hosting account. You should be able to download as many themes as you want from Wp.

  28. March 20th, 2009 at 17:11 | #28

Should I see the wp-conent directory in wordpress or in filezilla? Thank you for your help.

  29. March 20th, 2009 at 21:24 | #29

I have two problems. First, none of the preview pictures come up for my themes when I go to appearances and then themes in my administration area.

Second, I am not getting my Fusion 2.5 theme to come out the way I have seen it look in the preview. (I viewed it another blog that I have on another site).

  30. March 21st, 2009 at 14:49 | #30

    figaro,
I have installed filezilla and have put all my information into the ‘new site’ form. After, I get connected it does not show anything but an empty folder with my blog name on it, in the left hand column where I should see my wp-content theme folders. I’m using my host name and password that I got from my bluehost.com account…is this correct? I’m just wondering where I need to go to get my wp-files into my filezilla to transfer?

  31. March 21st, 2009 at 18:01 | #31

@jenna: If you are with Bluehost, you don’t really need to use filezilla…you can log into Cpanel and use the file manager. Just add /cpanel after your web address and then login using your bluehost username and password. See the directions in the videos here on uploading a theme using Cpanel.

    Hi Figaro
I use Dreamweaver to modify my current site. I have been playing around with wordpress but still like DW. Is it possible to transfer the images, documents etc from inove and play with it on Dreamweaver, or shall I just use wordpress? The reason I ask is because I’m kinda used to using Dreamweaver.
    Thanks
    D

  37. April 15th, 2009 at 13:31 | #37

Dreamweaver and WordPress are two completely different things. You can use Dreamweaver to edit your WP files if you like.

Download theme: yep. Unzip and extract theme: Uh-huh. Upload to FTP thingy-bob: nope, lost me.

Rather frustrating that you go into the minutiae of unzipping a file and then completely gloss over all that FTP stuff.

    Thanks, but this was useless…

  39. May 6th, 2009 at 16:20 | #39

    @Stu: You’re welcome…your refund is on its way ;-)

  40. May 7th, 2009 at 00:27 | #40

Thanks for that! I’m totally new to FTP, and having used cPanel before, I assumed that I could extract a folder from within, guess not eh?

    Hi Figaro,
I’ve just started experimenting with wordpress and I’m now trying to set up my own blog on my own domain. I downloaded a new free theme as I’d managed to get a test page set-up with a standard theme OK. Problem was I couldn’t figure out where I needed to upload the new files.
Your video has answered all my questions and also taught me about using c-panel to upload and unzip.
Thanks very much for all your help. Charlie.

HELP! I’ve followed these tutorials exactly. I’ve tried uploading the plugins thourgh the wordpress installer and uploading it manually and they don’t seem to work.

The plugins show up on my admin page and I’m able to active them. However when I drag the widget onto the sidebar they don’t show up. I’ve had this problem with every plugin I’ve downloaded. The only ones that work are the default ones that came with the inove template.
