Basic WordPress Theme Editing for the Non-Techie: Part 1

The following video is intended for the non-techie who wants to learn a little about editing a WordPress theme. I’ll post follow-up videos over the next few months covering several tips for editing WordPress themes. If you are an experienced coder, then this is not for you, but if you want to remove the comments link from your WordPress theme and have no idea how to go about it, then this, and future videos in this “non-techie” series may be for you.

Hi, I was wondering if someone can help me. I am working with iNove and am having difficulty add content to the header. I’d like to ad a drop box that has information only having it come out of the header instead of in a sidebar. I have done this before with other themes, but am having trouble with iNove because it appears that the header template is incomplete. I cannot find the data that calls the css so that I can add my new info. Can anyone tell me where the real iNove header template info is. Header template says to call data from header/template so it has to be stored elsewhere.
    Thank you.

Sorry to have bothered, I found the separate Template file. I had never worked with a theme that had a template that wasn’t accessible from the usual dashboard.
Hope I didn’t cause any trouble,
If you want to take a look at what I’ve done with iNove, view
    thanks again

A question about editing this theme. In removing the title and description in the header with a clickable graphic image, you appear to be eliminating the tag. Is there a way to preserve the tag with the graphic header or edit/move the defaults?

I’m referring to the h1 tag

You can use display:none; in the css to remove those items. Does that accomplish what you want?

I’m actually trying to preserve the h1 tag in the title. I don’t think that does it unless I’m missing something. ?????

I got it. The display:none; did the trick. Thanks so much.

These videos for newbies are great.

An excellent video. I’ve only just started looking at WordPress, and am having a go at building a theme from scratch. The info in this video is very useful and explained really well.

    Looking forward to Part Two!

    Many thanks.

Your tutorials for non techie people like me.. is fantastic..
you sure lit up a few dark tunnels in my brain..
great info..you are #1 on my book mark list..I have some questions..
A couple of things..This xmapp thing ..I noticed you used this instead of your Cpanel or FTp hosting site..to create a backup working theme to practice on… should I get one of these.. I have
been looking at http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html.. whats your thought on this..
I’m not sure which one you used.. currently I use Filezilla as my FTP site/source..
and I have not backed anything as of yet..!

    do I need this?

also the editor you mentioned EditPlus3 is this designed for php editing and should I download this, you mentioned that is open source
( free ) is this correct..
would you happened to have the download link for this..

    thanks again..
    One more thing..
I wanted to get my avatar pic on this tutorial site, cant find where to do that..
The last time I wrote something on the WPforum site my avatar automatically appeared but that was when I had WP.com and WP.org site.. I no longer have either of them.. is the Admin / dashboard area where I need to upload my pic/avatar..?????

    1. See the following video for how to set-up XAMPP and WP on your computer.

    2. EditPlus isn’t open source (I mispoke), but it is free to download and use and then asks for you to register it after a specific time frame. It is a very good php, css, etc. editor. Then link is here:

    3. Use http://en.gravatar.com/ to get your avatar in comments here, on the WP.org site, and anyother site that allows it.
