Goodbye WordPress.org — I’ve made my point
This morning I made my last post on the wordpress.org forums…I think I’ve made my point for those who have followed the “moderating” issue there for the past couple of days.
To The Forum Jerks:
MichaelH: I’ll never post to the wordpress.org forums again. Congratulations…if that was your objective, you are a success.
kperrone: Who are you anyway? I’d never even seen you until two days ago. Yes, you’re a jerk and a troll…enough said.
To a few people, of many regular helpers in the forums, who are actually competent and do seem to get what Open Source support is really about:
Samboll: You’re a true mod and helper. Sorry we ended on a sour note…some people turn the other cheek…some fight back. You were the one person who chimed in on the, now closed, thread and suggested a compromise. MichaelH replied and basically told you to shove it…he will do what he wants…and you support him? You’re a better man than I. Anyway, it was a pleasure helping along with you over the past few months. No more “modlooks” from me — I think MichaelH may have a better understanding of what a real spammer is now…unfortunately, you got caught in the middle. Of course, I could be wrong…for the past 17 Hours, while MichaelH has been preoccupied with deleted dozens of my posts, some “real” paypal spam has been setting at the very top of the forums…irony at it’s best
whooami: You do have a tendency to “go off” on people, but I’ll give you two things: 1. You know your stuff. I would have never figured out the modsecurity issue without your help, and 2. You can take it as well as you can dish it out.
ClaytonJames: Remember, Woodford Reserve…can’t beat it
Now, don’t get all teary eyed…this site isn’t going anywhere, but the focus and purpose IS going to change. I’ll just find another Open Source project to provide real help for.
As I said, I will no longer make free WordPress videos, but my last exchange with whooami did give me an idea. I think I will start reposting stuff from the “creative commons” WordPress docs to this site. Of course, that is not going to provide real help to anyone…it’ll just create SEO for this site. In short, I’ll just make this site like 99.9% of the others out there…I’ll make it all about ad revenue, Google juice, and SEO.
To quote Samboll:
this is crap figaro
Yes, I agree…it is!

Figaro,
I’ve intentionally not replied to the pile on at the forum but you do good work helping people with your video tutorials: thank you very much.
I’m hoping that you’ll reconsider and keep helping WordPress users. You do know your stuff.
Good luck.
@Jan Dembowski
I don’t blame you…nothing to be gained by jumping into crap like that. Thanks for the note…best of luck to you as well.
Jerks? You should call them what they really are. A bunch of XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX [Edited by site admin]. I’m agree with Jan and hope you will reconsider as well.
@JohnnyT
JohnnyT…and accurate description, but edited all the same…a little too colorful for this site, but people can use their imagination
Thanks for that reaming me in this post — its appreciated.
ugh, can you either fix that link from my name or remove it, please? either one is fine.
@whoo
I meant is as a compliment…otherwise you would have been listed under the “Jerks” heading
The observation that you have a tendency to “go off” on people is just a fact…if you doubt it, ask someone else who will be honest with you and listen to them.
Link fixed.
It is amazing, 5 minutes ago I was finding my wordpress.org password to pick you tricks / help. Now I’m posting here, expressing my disappointment with what occured over the past 5 days. That said, I am posting here in support of your point of view.
I am a technologist, and a pretty good one. I do participate in multiple forums, offering my advice for free. That said, if my help leads someone to my site (which is currently all but non existent currently) and they are further helped, what is the harm?
I will avoid a rant, as the words will mostly be lost outside this private forum. Again, it seems you have done great work, and I hope to find the help I need here. Though I will continue to leverage wordpress.org, I highly doubt I will contribute much. God forbid I actually complete my website, and someone links through.
Best Regards
I’d respect your motives and claim to want to help people if you hadn’t done so much breastbeating in the forums talking about how much you helped others; as if no one else had helped as much. That being said, it’s my personal opinion that there are a great many folks helping with WordPress and there is no dearth of resources for all things WordPress. You seem to be an intelligent man who wants to share his expertise and enthusiasm, so why not consider helping some of the other CMSs out there which have great promise and which could use a spirited and knowledgeable individual such as yourself? I am becoming quite enamored of two recently discovered CMSs, both of which serve niche web design markets and could quite frankly use some help getting off the ground. (I am NOT in any way affiliated with either of them, just an enthusiastic user.) One is Get Simple CMS, created by web designer Chris Cagle. (http://get-simple.info) The other is a Sapphire-driven full blown CMS to rival Expression Engine in features (but without the steep price tag), SilverStripe CMS. (http://silverstripe.org) Both are open source.
Cheers!
@Joni
As I said in a previous comment, I may find another project to help. And, if I do, hopefully, if it starts to become successful, it won’t head down the same path WordPress is heading. Too many open source projects “start out” in the true spirit of open source only to start acting more like Microsoft once they experience a little success.
Yep. Do you remember MovableType? Happened to them too once they forgot about their user base and what made them the success they were/are. (And in fact, if it wasn’t for MT’s great licensing fiasco of March 2004, WP might not be where it is today either!)
Ego has always been the root to all such problem, at least in my opinion. Been in IT long enough to see a lot of good open or non-open software gone bust due to the elusive ego
All these that i’m reading it can’t be happening, Mr. Figaro is a truly reliable information source, because of him i understand more of wordpress than i used to..
peace Figaro – you do good work
:>)
@samboll
Thanks. Peace to you as well.
Figaro,
In my brief assessment of you through what I’ve read on WordPress forums and here, I believe you to be a highly knowlegable, sensitive ‘giver’. Your retreat from WordPress is not only their loss, but many others’, as well. I’m not into people who ‘breastbeat’, either, but the fact that you show up over 1,800 times in a search of the support forums on WordPress gives you enough credibility, in my opinion, for me to tolerate a substantial amount of ‘breastbeating’.
I, too, hope you reconsider, but I certainly can understand (and relate) if you don’t. I just hope that your videos and posts’ content can still be viewed here (or someplace else?) by the masses that can make good use of them.
Good luck, and I will be checking in here from time-to-time to see what’s new and how it’s going for you…

@RRTeddy
Thanks. Just one point of clarification. There was no “breastbeating” in the forums…click on any of those 1,800 links and see if you see it…you will notice the commenter made that statement here but provided nothing to support it. I didn’t comment on it originally because it was just silly.
The WP videos I’ve already made will still be here. I’ve changed the name of the site from Free WordPress Tutorials to Free Technology Tutorials. I’ll continue to make videos and post them on other technology subjects…just no more on WordPress.
I only discovered your WordPress a couple days ago and have fallen in love with them! So well done. You gave me the confidence and skills to accomplish adjust many things on my various blogs that I have been baffled (or fearful) after reading Codex instructions, other text and video help articles by others.
Count me among those who hope you reconsider creating more WordPress oriented videos. You don’t need to participate with the forum to do that. I found you via YouTube.
If you won’t do them for free anymore, I for one would consider a modest subscriber fee to access them.
Thanks again for aiding my learning curve!
Kat
Oops. Please excuse my typos!
@Kat
Thanks Kat. I have been thinking about starting a subscription based site for WordPress support and video tutorials, but just haven’t started anything yet…I’m pretty busy with other projects at the moment, but may think about this more in the near future.
