Upgrading WordPress to 2.8 — Running into Problems?

I just upgraded this site to WordPress 2.8 yesterday and everything went smoothly…upgraded a few other sites as well with no problems and fixed a couple of botched upgrades for clients…problems mostly related to incompatible plugins. I have noticed a couple little annoyances (for example, in the post writing window, once I switched to single column now it won’t go back to 2 columns), but no show-stoppers.

If you are upgrading, be sure to:

  1. Backup you database first just in-case you have problems and need to recover.
  2. If you want to be “extra safe”, backup your WordPress source code…or at least, your wp-content directory
  3. Deactivate ALL plugins — this is very important. If a plugin is incompatible with 2.8, then it could break your site
  4. Change to the default, Kubrick theme
  5. Upgrade using the built-in upgrade feature IF you are upgrading from 2.7+. If you are upgrading from an earlier version, I would recommend that you DO NOT use a plugin to upgrade. In that case, upgrade manually.
  6. Change back to your custom theme, if needed.
  7. Reactivate your plugins one at a time to ensure they work.

Check out the following thread on wordpress.org for possible solutions to common problems people have been experiencing during the upgrade.

    1. Must I back up again? cos I have ever back up when I upgrade 2.7 to
    2.7.1.
    2. Where can I find WordPress source code in “extra safe”?
    4. Before upgrade, must use default theme?

    Thanks for your answering

    @Dhini
    1. If you don’t backup and run into problems, then you may wish you had.
    2. I’m not sure what you mean by “extra safe”, but if you have 2.7 then you can backup from the WP admin. If you want to do it manually, then just download the source from the wp.org site.
    3. No, but again, it may prevent problems.

Hi. I’m installing a new version of wordpress 2.8.2 to a brand new domanin. I installed using cpanel and have done this several times with no problems. I am getting a 500 internal server error and can’t figure out for the life of me why. I’ve done everything the same as I did when I recently installed on my other add on domains. I even deleted 2.8.2 and tried installing 2.8.1 to see if the issue was the new version, but to no avail. Any clues or suggestions out there?

I figured it out. It was a problem with my host. They took out the hyphen in the name for some dumb reason. All fixed.

Thanks for the tips. You are one of my first sources when I have a WP problem or question. I followed your instructions and didn’t have any trouble upgrading (knock on wood – all looks good). A million thanks.
