Customized iNove Theme for Download — 200px Header

January 17th, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

I’ve customized the iNove theme — Version 1.2.2 — to increase the header height from 132px to 200px. If it’s not already set as default, you can see it on this site by selecting “iNove 200px Header” under “Change Themes” on the right.

Click the link below to download a zip file containing the changed files. I’ve included the PhotoShop psd files so that you can edit the headers to add your own logos, images, text, etc. To use, simply unzip and replace the files in the default iNove 1.2.2 theme with the ones in the unzipped folder. Note, I only include the files in the zip that were changed, plus the psd files.

    What do you do with this? Do you completely delete the old theme in the theme folder in the cPanel or upload some files to it? Will this work with the change themes menu too?

  2. January 20th, 2009 at 17:34 | #2

    You take the files in the zip and use them to replace the same ones in your theme…don’t delete the entire theme. You will want to open the psd files (PhotoShop) and edit them…otherwise, you will have eduChalk in your header…edit them to add whatever you want in your header.

    Oh i haven’t got Photoshop and stuff i will sent it to my Nephew.

    Figaro,

    I am interested in the work you have done. I don’t necessarily want to edit my header, but I want to be able to use more of the screen. With Inove it has two columns and a gray backdrop that is unusable. For my Video blog to work, I need to have more usable space and I want to keep this theme.

    Can you please point me in the right direction to how I can make them Wider? Thank you in advance for your time and effort.

    Tim

    What exactly do you want to do? In the latest version of this theme, there is a page template that has no sidebar, so you have the complete width of the theme for your content. Just create a page and on the right click the templates drop down and select no sidebar. If you still want a sidebar, but just want it narrower and the content area wider, then that would take some css adjustments and header adjustments.

    Hi there,

    Firstly, Thanks for your great tutorials, it’s a big help for me a newbie to wordpress..

    I really like the idea of changing the size of the header… Is there anyway for me to design a complete header in PS and not have any text added by the inove theme? (I want to design the text myself… and not have the inove title appear in the header..)

    Also can I change the title of the page only without adding the same words to the header? (the title that appears in IE or Firefox on the top, not the actual header)

    Thanks in advance for your help…

  7. January 21st, 2009 at 10:19 | #7

    @Chaimdan
    See my reply in the following thread on the wp.org forums for an answer to your first question.

    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/236076?replies=4

    For your second question, once you remove the title from showing in your header, then just go into the admin of your blog and in settings/general change the name of the blog to reflect what you want showing in IE or FF browser tabs.

    WOW!! You’re great, I’ll try it in a bit and see how things work out…

    Since it seems that you’re the iNove expert I was thinking what else do I need to know… so here are a few small questions… Is there anyway to not display on a page “comments are closed”? I have a couple pages that need only some static info.. and on those same pages anyway to remove the date or title from the top of the page? and finally I don’t suppose there is anyway to customize the sidebar on another page?! (aside from making it one column and creating the sidebar myself..)

    THANKS AGAIN!!!

    Oh one more thing. I set “I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors”

    Is that safe if I don’t want people to find it through search or any otherway than me giving out the URL?

  10. January 21st, 2009 at 12:39 | #10

    I’m not the iNove expert, the person who created it is the expert on how it works…I just change some of the images with PhotoShop.

    You can do what you want by creating a template…see Stepping into templates in the wp.org docs.

  11. January 21st, 2009 at 12:40 | #11

    No, that just “in theory” keeps search engine bots from crawling your site…it will still be found through search engines.

    Very nice site and nice collection of WordPress info. Also like what you did with iNove. Thanks for puttin it out there!!

    I’m playin with the iNove200 and like the bigger header but can’t seem to lower the title a little to vertically center it in the bigger header. Do you know where postioning of the title and tagline are in the stylesheet. Thanks!
    - bob

  14. January 25th, 2009 at 12:47 | #14

    Well…. I figured out how to lower the title by editing the header.php file a little. No absolute positioning in the style sheet. I’m happy now (grin) and thanks again for the bigger header!!

  16. February 6th, 2009 at 15:25 | #16

    Ok! I downloaded all the files, and edited the psd files in photoshop…no problem. Got them loaded up to my ftp, but I can’t get the jpg. images to change. So, I’m still showing educhalk.org if I upload those jpg files to my ftp. I currently have theme deleted from the ftp, so I have no background at all.

    I’d sure appreciate some help!

  17. February 6th, 2009 at 18:14 | #17

    @Kristen@The Frugal Girl
    Okay, I see you have no header, so evidently you have deleted the default ones…good. So, when you edited the two psd files, did you save them as header_footer.jpg and header_footer_1col.jpg and upload them to the img folder in your theme? Make sure they are jpg and not gif, or some other format.

  18. February 6th, 2009 at 21:57 | #18

    Yay! I’ve got it now…thanks! I have a friend who is making a header for me, and I wanted the larger header that you have. I’ve just got the plain black up right now, but hopefully she will have my custom one done soon.

    Thanks again!!

    Hey Figaro,

    After adjusting the header size, how did you move the menu and search bar down?

  20. February 7th, 2009 at 10:43 | #20

    If you replace your css file with the one in the download, it should already be adjusted for you.

    February 7th, 2009 at 11:00 | #21

    Nevermind, solved my own problem (unless you have a better way)

    #navigation {
    position:absolute;
    top:178px;
    }

  22. February 8th, 2009 at 20:36 | #22

    I have tried every ftp method to get my reworked ‘header_footer.jpg’ and ‘header_footer_1col.jpg to update, and have yet to see a change on my site. I’m under wp->themes->inove->img. I have tried replacing the oem files with your jpegs and with mine, as per your instructions, nothing happens. Nor does the header height increase.

    what am I doing wrong?

  23. February 8th, 2009 at 20:40 | #23

    nevermind, it seems that the ‘syle.css’ file hadn’t updated correctly! Now I just need to play with the sizing. Thanks!

  24. February 8th, 2009 at 21:05 | #24

    if it isn’t one thing, its another. Now I cannot open the editor at all in my admin page. I get the following ‘The requested theme does not exist.’

    hi, would u help me with my prob?
    i like inove very much, but, i cant edit categories / archive,i want to make my categories show how much post i make, and show sub categories. how can i edit that? can you help me??
    and if i cant do that, how to remove standart categories/archive?

    thanks..

  26. February 16th, 2009 at 06:05 | #26

    figaro, would you know of a plugin that i could post a html message above select pages in the iNove menu.

    For instance so i can write an announcement like message that would go on only the pages i tick box.

    A few announcement input fields would be good to so i could custom small messages on the top of some other sections of the site so it doesn’t go to all pages, posts etc!

  27. February 17th, 2009 at 14:56 | #27

    @dawiecool: I’m not sure how to edit the categories, but you can remove them by using widgets.

  28. February 17th, 2009 at 22:40 | #28

    @figaro
    do u mean to use categories widget, and the default dissapear? i tried, and didnt work. so i get 2 categories widget.
    :(

    @hxoa: I’m not sure why the comments don’t show until you refresh. You may want to ask the theme author on his blog…I really just do some simple image adjustments to the theme.

    Hi Figaro,

    Thank you for helping me make my header bigger! My website has practically changed over night.

    I am having having trouble getting the footer to look right. Any suggestions?

    @Bradley Ryan

    Find the following code in style.css and change the -260px to -280px

    /* footer START */
    #footer {
    background:url(img/header_footer.jpg) 0 -260px no-repeat;

    Hello.
    I have some problems with the 200 header.
    I downloaded the 200 header, and it looks fine on my laptop, but with the widescreen at work the meny get higher and the backgroud is divided in two below the header. The area which differ between the bg and bg 2 col also is higher….
    It`s the same with your site ( testsite) I see.
    Do you have ant solution?

  34. March 11th, 2009 at 10:08 | #34

    @Kjagen: No, I haven’t noticed it…what resolution is your widescreen set to?

    Hi,

    I’m using the inove200 theme. In the ‘current theme options’ there is a choice for the menubar. When I choose the ‘show categories as menu’ radio button, I get an ugly navigation menu in the header. That is because i have too much categories to fit on one row, so the rest is showed on a second row. In IE the second row is almost not visible, because the content is over it. In Firefox the second row is visible, but the layout is wrong with the background header_footer image.

    Can you explain me what to do, to be able to display multiple navigation menu rows?
    Thanks!

    March 20th, 2009 at 05:21 | #38

    Hi,

    In addition to my previous question about the menubar in the header, I have an other question. The solution to my new question would make the other question unimportant.

    My new idea is that I would like a dropdown menu item next to the links to the pages, in the navigation menu bar. In the ‘current theme options’ the choice for the menubar is set to ‘show pages as menu’. I want to have an additional menu item with a dropdown with the complete categories hierarchy.
    The inove theme already has the menubar option to show each of the main categories in the menubar with a dropdown to subcategories, but that is not what I want, because I want to have one single menu item in the navigation menu bar (next to the pages items) for all categories.

    Can you help me?

  39. March 20th, 2009 at 06:53 | #39

    @Jim: I’m sure what you want could be done, but it would take some significant digging into the code to customize the theme. Maybe post this to the themes forum on wp.org and someone may be able to help.

    @figaro
    i’ve found an article on this topic and i’ve been able to make it work for Firefox, but the menu isn’t dropping down in IE. The article has some kind of hack for this problem, but that isn’t working for me either.
    The article can be found here:
    http://wphacks.com/how-to-make-categories-drop-down-menu/

    Other problem:
    I’m not sure if the code in the article is designed to have multiple dropdown menus for children categories, but on my machine that isn’t working. I’m not sure, but I think the dropdown menu is only listing all toplevel categories and disgards subcategories.

    I dont know if this has come up before but why is there two identical files (header_footer and header_footer_1col) in the img folder? Are we supposed to edit them both to become identical?
    I am using Photoshop – shall I duplicate the ‘header_footer’ and name it ‘header_footer_1col’ once finished my header?

    Thanks in advance for your help!

  42. March 25th, 2009 at 07:11 | #42

    @Darron: The _1col one is used for the page template with no sidebar. If you don’t use that template, then you don’t need to edit that file.

    Hi.
    Do you know where to adjust, I want to put picture which is 900 wide in a page with i column. But now it won`t strech wider than the width of a 2 column ( about 620). Do you know where to adjust this?
    Thanks for the header

  44. April 3rd, 2009 at 19:10 | #44

    @Kjagen: I’m not sure what you are trying to do. The header is already 936px wide. Do you have a link so I can see what you are trying to do?

  45. Kjagen
    April 5th, 2009 at 02:29 | #45

    Sorry,it`s not the header.
    When I choose a page with the 1column template, a want a photo to streach all across that page , about 920.. But when I add a photo it won?t get wider than if the page had the 2 column

    I have already eliminated the padding from the top of my website by editing the style.css file, but under what section do I need to edit the padding in order to eliminate the padding from the bottom of the website?

  47. April 19th, 2009 at 18:09 | #47

    Find the following in style.css and try adjusting the padding there.

    /* layout START */
    #wrap {
    background:url(img/light.gif) center top no-repeat;
    padding:20px 0;
    }

    April 19th, 2009 at 19:59 | #48

    @figaro
    Thanks for the quick reply. That section you are referring to is for the padding for the header, and I have since found out that there is no padding for the bottom of the theme, it is actually a portion of the header/footer jpeg that just appears to be padding at the bottom because of the different colored ‘segment’ for lack of a better description. I am going to try cropping out that portion of the jpeg and see what that does…thanks again for the quick reply

    Hi again
    This comment option on pages I removed from my site. Now I want it back for certain pages. The problem is I can`t remember what I deleted and in which template… Do you know?

    I also is unable to get a photo streching all across a one column page ( 1000 px wide) Is this possible?

  50. April 30th, 2009 at 06:41 | #50

    @Kjagen: Just download a new copy of the theme and compate the files. There is a no-sidebar page template in the theme…use that to post a wide picture on a page.
