Changed WordPress Blog Address in Settings–Locked Out? How to Fix!

December 28th, 2008 Leave a comment Go to comments

See the video below for step-by-step directions for “fixing” this problem through phpMyAdmin. If you don’t have access to phpMyAdmin, or are hesitant about messing with the database, see the video in this post for directions on how to “patch” your config.php file to regain access until you can get someone to help you fix the problem in the database.

YOU just SAVED my mental (and physical probably) health! I am also having server issues – which is how this happened (was on the phone and clicking around like an idjit – so the URL was actually trying to go to my Post Office Box LOL – I can laugh now!)… so this has been a mind-bending day.

Still having server issues – may change servers (99% chance)

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Woohoo!! You are a life saver and a time saver. I spent hours trying to fix one of my sites. I was just changing it to see what would happen. Guess I know now.

  27. February 9th, 2010 at 21:18 | #27

figaro thanks for quick and proper fix. I read up alot on this, others have you inserting text into your wp-config.php file but your strategy is a more sound principle.

  28. February 10th, 2010 at 16:35 | #28

@Scot Mann: You’re welcome…there is no substitute for fixing the problem in the db…editing wp-config is just a patch.

Thank you, you have no idea. I was pulling an all-nighter and at 4:30am (hours before launch) I got the fantastic idea to change the “general settings.” You are the greatest.

I followed every step you took, but nothing changed. I still get “Error establishing a database connection” do you have any more suggestions? I wold really appreciate it. Thanks man

  31. March 1st, 2010 at 14:46 | #31

@ackeem: Who is your host? Are you sure your db server is running? Was your site running and then this happened or are you trying to set this up for the first time? Give me some more info and I may be able to help. Link to your site?

  32. March 25th, 2010 at 09:40 | #32

Worked great! Thanks for saving my you know what!

  33. March 30th, 2010 at 14:29 | #33

Whew! Thanks for that help – extremely easy to fix a bad mistake. The reason I wanted to change the blog name, though, was that this wordpress installation is in a directory with its own add-on domain name. I’d rather the individual posts not include the name of the root and main domain name. You can go to the site using the add-on domain, but as soon as you click on another post or page, the whole domain structure shows up. Any help for how to keep that from happening?

  34. March 30th, 2010 at 18:12 | #34

@Susan: That shouldn’t happen if you have the add-on set-up properly with your host.

    hi,

thanks for the video… however, i’m on a mac and don’t know where to find the php my admin to do all those changes. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks. using wordpress 2.9.2

  38. April 17th, 2010 at 14:36 | #38

@:aida: phpMyAdmin is on your webserver not your computer…you do it the same way I show in the video as long as your host provides access to phpMyAdmin. If you are hosting on your own computer, then you will need to search (Google) for how to do this on your MAC.
